Can i take a hpt now????????

ok i have a 29 day cycle and i ovulated last sunday and its saturday and 8 days till my period. my girlfriend just got a bfp and her doc told her that she is 3weeks. isnt that early for a bfp? so woud it be ok for me to take one now but if not how much longer should i wait?
