Why doesn't NASCAR have other companys make tires for their Cup cars?

Many moons ago, Nascar allowed both Hoosier and Goodyear to provide race rubber for the Cup series. Some races went fine, but when it was bad, cars got destroyed and drivers got hurt. It's partly a safety deal to have only one tire supplier.
