How many magnitudes does a thin high altitude haze obscure?

The limiting magnitude under a truly clear, dark, and dry sky can be two or more magnitudes fainter than on an equally dark-appearing but hazy night. Low-level haze and humidity can have an even greater effect; from an isolated coastal site, I have seen differences of over three magnitudes without any obvious clouds or ground fog.
