Thinking about jobs in the navy and I would like some help?

I have a lot of friends who are ex-navy, and every single one of them pretty much tell me how horrible it is. It hasn't really deterred me much, but I would like to know more about which jobs I should do that would give me a better experience with the navy then what they had. A good part of them say that what ever I do I should not be an MM, and I will definitely heed that warning. I was thinking more along the lines of being a cook or corpsman, but I would like to know what other type of jobs there are in the navy that are pretty decent and wouldn't have me wanting to jump over board. They navy is something I would like to do because I want to travel and just do something with my life since I'm not accomplishing much in my life right now. I'm 24, and I do have to loose weight first, so I have plenty of time to study for the asvab and look more into jobs. I'm hoping that in two months time I'll be able to join after loosing weight. Anyway, any kind of help with job types will be appreciated! I'm not necessarily looking for slack jobs because I am a hard worker, but I just want something I will hopefully enjoy and not regret.
